On 16/May/2012 at 14.30 – 16.30. Speaker: Professor Chimay J. Anumba, Head of the Department of Architectural Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University, USA. [Visiting Professor, School of Civil and Building Engineering.] Summary: Developments in Building Information Modelling (BIM) have resulted in significant industry interest and uptake. Most new projects are dependent on BIM for resolving coordination, schedule, integration, estimating and other functions. Advances in information and communications technologies (ICT) are continuing to open up new opportunities and applications. As such, more needs to be done to fully exploit these technologies’ potential and to meet the requirements of increasingly complex projects. This lecture will provide a historical perspective on BIM, review current developments, and explore potential future directions for BIM. The role of integrated project delivery and other collaborative systems will be highlighted. An insight into potential future developments and applications (for example, in healthcare facilities) will also be provided.

Research Student Health and Life Sciences Conference - from 28/May/2012 to 28/May/2012

From 28/May/2012 to 28/May/2012. On Monday 28th May 2012, the Loughborough University Research School of Health & Life Sciences will be holding its second research student conference. This is an ideal opportunity for the school to build a community amongst the many PhD students undertaking health and life sciences related research across the campus and beyond. This event will build on the success of last year’s event – reported here http://tinyurl.com/RSHLSstudentconf2011pr What's the format? The conference will revolve around a poster competition - all entries will be displayed on the day and students will have the opportunity to discuss and defend their research with peers. The best posters selected in advance, by an academic panel, will also be given an opportunity to do a short presentation (10 mins max.) in a plenary session. What's more, all posters will be printed free of charge and are yours to keep after the conference. Cash prizes will be awarded at the end of the day. The will also be a keynote guest speaker which will be announced closer to the time. Why should you enter? A research poster and the ability to present/discuss your work are necessary steps required to get beyond the first year of your PhD. Therefore many of you will already be well prepared to enter the competition. Those who have not been asked to create a poster yet, this conference offers a good incentive to produce yours in advance of any supervisor-imposed deadline. What will you get out of it? Networking opportunity - with students/supervisors in similar research fields . Conference experience - presenting/discussing/defending your work . Poster competition - posters will be printed and given to you after at no cost . Cash prizes - best poster (£50), best verbal poster defence (£50) and best plenary speech (£50), delegates best poster (£50) Refreshments and a buffet lunch will be provided, allowing time for you to interact with students and supervisors from different departments and identify where there may be mutual areas of interest within your research. How do I enter? To register your place for this event please fill out your details here: http://tinyurl.com/RSHLSstudentconf2012 Poster Competition - Posters must be submitted as A1 in either landscape or portrait orientation. Please send your posters in a PDF format to E.A.Bristow@lboro.ac.uk by Monday 14th May. Students invited to present will be contacted by the 16th May.

Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Huaizhong Zhao - Stochastic (Partial) Differential Equations and Stochastic Dynamical Systems - 30/May/2012 at 5.00pm

On 30/May/2012 at 5.00pm. Uncertainty and randomness occurs naturally in many real world problems. Probability theory provides mathematical tools to study and to model them. Random processes were noted by Brown, Bachelier and Einstein et al to describe random movements in various contexts such as, particle movement in a liquid, and economics. On the other hand, many physical systems are nonlinear in nature. Classical probability theory and canonical stochastic processes are basically linear. To understand random and nonlinear phenomena, one needs to study stochastic differential equations and stochastic partial differential equations. Mathematicians developed many new mathematics to understand random phenomena. Stochastic analysis began with its ground-breaking work in the study of stochastic integrals, together with some pioneering work of Kolmogorov, Markov and Wiener on probability theory, Markov process and rigorous mathematical construction of Brownian motion. It has been profoundly developed as a vital fundamental research area in mathematics in recent decades. It has been discovered to have intrinsic connections with many areas of mathematics, and vast applications in physics, engineering, finance, biology etc. The theory of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) and stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) is a fascinating area of research. The theory of existence and uniqueness is pretty much developed after work of many mathematicians. With these results, it is natural to regard SDEs and SPDEs as random dynamical systems. In fact, it is not trivial to prove that SDEs or SPDEs can generate a random dynamical system. To understand random phenomena, we study the long-term behaviour and invariant set of stochastic dynamical systems. In this inaugural lecture, Professor Huaizhong Zhao will introduce the stochastic dynamical system generated by SDEs and SPDEs and discuss recent developments especially invariant manifolds, stationary solutions, random periodic solutions. Professor Zhao will also talk about probabilistic/analysis tools which have developed in recent years.

On 13/June/2012 at 7-8.30pm. Come and find out what it's like to be a Paralympian at this FREE event. A number of interactive stations allow you to experience various aspects of wheelchair sport and the research support that can be provided. These stations include: •Learn to push a wheelchair: Wheelchair handling skills are taught as a novel task during the early stages of rehabilitation in a variety of rehab centres across the UK. Interactive stations will allow visitors to push a wheelchair at various speeds and around obstacle courses to highlight the demands of wheelchair sports. •Meet the dietician: This station will discuss healthy eating habits for the everyday person all the way up to the Paralympic athlete and will include an interactive activity on how to read food labels. •Health markers in disability sport: This station discusses immune function in athletes, with a focus on wheelchair athletes, and how immune function may be improved through physical activity interventions. •A station will investigate questions like “Why do people with a disability not engage in physical activity?” “What barriers do they face?” Without answers to these questions, we do not know how to increase access and support opportunities for individuals with a disability. •Finally, there will be the opportunity to play wheelchair basketball or tennis, under the supervision of members of the British National team. There will also be an opportunity to talk to these athletes so bring along some questions!

On 24/October/2012 at 5.00pm. It is widely agreed that current international efforts in planning for a globally sustainable future are insufficient. For example, there are significant concerns over the emission of greenhouse gases associated with energy generation, and yet it is predicted that the energy demands will be 45% higher within the next twenty years. This clearly highlights a need for a paradigm shift in the way we use and preserve our energy and other resources, in particular in the field of manufacturing where the effects of resource depletion, climate change and population growth will have a severe impact on the design of future products and their production methods. In this lecture, Professor Shahin Rahimifard will be using a target year of 2050 to describe four possible scenarios for the future of manufacturing industry. Professor Rahimifard will consider the impact of these scenarios on five key issues influencing manufacturing businesses - namely resources, products, production, labour and market. He will then explore possible solutions for one of the greatest challenges facing the global society, i.e. How can we manufacture a sustainable future for 9 billion people in 2050?

Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Stewart Robinson - Simple Models for a Complex World - 14/November/2012 at 5.00pm

On 14/November/2012 at 5.00pm. Computer models provide simplified representations of the real world which are useful for understanding and predicting the future; but how simple should they be? Models are widely used to, for example, forecasting weather, predicting climate change and projecting economic trends. In developing such models there is a tension between obtaining approximate results quickly from a simple model and making extended efforts to generate models with a high level of fidelity. In this lecture we discuss why simple models are generally better. In doing so we shall demonstrate some simulation models that have been applied by business and the public sector, showing how they were used and the benefits that were obtained. Although set in a business context, the lessons have much wider applicability for the use of models in other fields.

Inaugural Lecture: Prof. Ray Dawson - Being Right is Not Good Enough - Why knowledge management initiatives fail - 5/December/2012 at 5.00pm

On 5/December/2012 at 5.00pm. Knowledge Management is of growing interest in business and industry today, and many organisations are looking to use knowledge management techniques. However, most knowledge management initiatives fail to measure up to expectations and many fail altogether. What is going wrong? Is this just a passing fad or can knowledge management be used to make worthwhile improvements to an organisation's way of working? In this lecture Professor Ray Dawson first examines what knowledge is and what makes the management of knowledge difficult. Professor Dawson concludes that organisations are right to want to embrace knowledge management, but being right is not good enough to ensure the success of any knowledge management initiative. There are many examples of knowledge management systems that have floundered or failed and some that have been successful. Is it not possible, therefore, to use this knowledge to learn from these experiences to improve the success rate? Professor Dawson describes a number of case studies of knowledge management initiatives and from these Professor Dawson derives a 12-step plan for successful knowledge management implementation.
